Bethany, a Year 5 teacher from a public school in South Australia, started using Banqer at the start of 2024. She found out about Banqer from a Facebook post and was instantly convinced by its efficiency as a class economy system.
I didn't want to spend hours setting one up, cutting out money, or buying a working Excel spreadsheet for a class economy,
she adds. Bethany wants to help students gain the know-how and confidence to make smart financial choices.
We are teaching the future generation, and we want them to be financially literate adults. The earlier we start, hopefully, the better off they'll be.
Enhancing education with Banqer’s resources and curriculum integration
For Bethany, setting up and implementing Banqer was a seamless experience. "It has got to be one of the easiest things that I have set up as a teacher.” Bethany enjoys the ability to enable various modules at her own pace and control specific aspects like tax rates and interest.
Bethany finds the resources on offer particularly impressive. She loves the variety of teacher and student instructional videos and the abundance of classroom and take-home materials for each module. Bethany is also very excited about the upcoming updates to the South Australian Curriculum and how Banqer will integrate with it.
How Banqer is shaping financial decisions and student engagement
The impact of Banqer on Bethany’s students has been remarkable. Students are more willing to talk about money, and there are conversations at home that parents have told me about,
she shares. This newfound financial literacy has even sparked discussions around pocket money and potential financial decisions among students and their families.
Bethany makes full use of the Class Store and Achievement system to keep students highly engaged. My kids are loving the class store, the tic-tac-toe game and the achievements, although they are quite cross with me that some of the items in the store are limited to one per student,
Bethany jokes. She has creatively edited the Class Store to include class resources, such as pencils, which the students regularly lose. This encourages students to manage their money wisely.
Encouraging wise money management and healthy competition
Bethany also encourages healthy competition in her class, with students striving to achieve the highest net worth by the end of the term, unlock all the achievements and reach the top of the leaderboard.
They're all trying to make the best financial choice to increase their net worth. It's very interesting to see them try to make that choice.
Bethany is planning to surprise her students with class auction and sale at the end of the year. This will allow them to spend their Banqer dollars on snacks and other items. They really enjoy the fact that they can actually interact with money and are learning to manage it better.
Financial literacy for schools made easy
Bethany’s message to other schools and educators is clear: Get on it. Just make an account, put in your class details, and start. It is so easy, and the kids love it.
She also appreciates the excellent support from Banqer’s primary coordinator, Madeleine. She's quick with her replies and lovely. Banqer is literally my favourite thing of the year.
